Weekend General's Achilles QF 17pdr Self Propelled Gun for Bolt Action

Hello, loyal followers!

As always, my absence does not indicate lack of modeling effort. Quite the contrary. I've been working on a US Infantrly platoon that will cover Operation Torch all the way through to the end of the war. I sold my British army and the buyer asked that I finish up the Commandos and the Achilles for a consistent look to the overall force. Work proceeds apace on the Commandos, but I finished the Achilles today so I thought I'd post pics here.

This, then, is the British Achilles QF 17pdr Self Propelled Gun. It took the tried-and-true US M10 Wolvering tank destroyer and replaced the (I believe) 90mm cannon with the British QF 17pdr anti-tank gun. This gives the Brits a much needed counter to the heavier armor of German tanks and packs a harder punch than the more common Shermans or Cromwells. Sure, the Sherman Firefly has a QF 17pdr too but I went with the Achilles because it looks different.

I'm really, really happy with the way she turned out... and... a little sad to be sending it off to someone. Hopefully she'll continue putting paid to the German 'Big Cats' on other Bolt Action tables.

Forward, the Geordies!

Well, despite the long lapse in posts I have not been idle. I've been feverishly working on some US Infantry because my wife said she'd learn the rules if I had an American force. Also, I found a couple players locally that both have German armies so I could use the same US force against them.

Now, while I'm plugging away at my American force, I thought this would be a good time to post pics of my mid/late war British force. Now, many of you probably remember I finished these up last year but due to a lack of technical know-how the posts were wiped when I changed phones. Now, with cloud-based photo services, I regale you once again with my Geordies.

Now, I chose the 50th because they'd been present at several major operations of the European Theater including Operations Torch, Husky, and Overlord. They were tough sods, chosen when the going was bound to be rough. The two red T's on their should insignia represent the Tyne and Tees rivers, which border their traditional recruiting area in the North of England. Almost all of the models here are Warlord, save Major Stretch who is a Reaper miniature.

The pics!

That's about it for the painted stuff. I've also got a small Commando platoon, and a QF 17-Pdr Achilles that are not yet painted. Since the US army I'm working on fills the same slot as the Geordies, sadly these sods get shuffled down on the priority list.

Thanks for looking!

Operation Sting, My First Tournament

Well, loyal readers, this weekend was my first Bolt Action tournament. I have to say it was an absolute blast!

It was a grand tournament, 1,000 points in a single platoon. There were three games on Saturday plus two on Sunday. Each game was based on one of the scenarios from the book with a little alteration to fit the campaign. To make things exciting, there were also secret missions to choose from which earned additional victory points.

My first game was versus a platoon of regular British infantry in the 'Take and Hold' scenario. My secret mission for the game was called Tora! Tora! Tora! The objective for this was to destroy my opponent's highest point value unit. Looking at his models at the side, I quickly put my money on the Sherman... The objective for the game was a section of road, dead center, that we felt was important because it controlled the road junction.

 photo IMG_20141019_124317.jpg

I decided, having won the roll-off, that I'd REALLY like to be the attacker and chose to place all four of my infantry sections along his table edge and place them in ambush. Sure enough, my opponent brought on his units right in front of me. The firefights were very short, and very bloody. My opponent learned that units in ambush are dangerous... especially when they're packing a Panzerfaust. This was the first time I've taken them and the first time I fired it I very handily took out the Sherman. Unfortunately, the brutal firefights along his table edge had pinned down my units and he had a good number of scoring units surrounding the objective. My turn six was one of the more brutal turns I've had in a Bolt Action game. My sniper killed his forward observer. My Nebelwerfer, medium mortar, and two MMG's hit. My one infantry squad in good order got off some long-ranged shots, and my StuH 42 decimated an entire section of Brits. In the end, neither of us controlled the objective (now clearly surrounded by piles of dead infantrymen). I did get my secret mission and denied his so the victory was mine by a narrow margin. First victory (ever) for me in Bolt Action. Phew!

Game two was on a lovely table with commanding heights at the corners (cleverly blocked by tree stands which completely blocked line of sight). There were some idyllic fields of grain, and an impressive windmill. Looking at this lovely windmill, with its three floors, I chose the secret mission entitled Currahee! This mission required you to control the largest piece of scenery on the table. Unfortunately, my opponent (playing an all veteran US Airborne force) won the roll off and placed HIS sniper unit in the building. Hmmmm... I wonder what secret mission he chose? The scenario was 'Take the Field' and there was one objective marker in each of the four table quadrants. All I had to do was capture one more than my opponent. Easy enough, right? Well, the game was a good one. I learned to hate US Halftracks and their HMG's. My medium mortar was an absolute ACE and landed shots four of the five turns it was able to fire. Two of those shots dropped into the halftracks and blew them to bits. One of them had his air observer, so I count myself lucky that I was able to kill him before he got off his second air strike. His first one, which took three turns to finally do anything, killed my Nebelwerfer.. but that was okay because it was mainly sitting in the corner, rueing the tree stands for blocking any shots. My opponent was very canny in his movement in this regard. Once again this game, my StuH 42 was more than worth its points, and basically carried the battle for me. We did have a very cinematic sniper duel between his on the third floor of the windmill and mine in a nearby wood. His halftracks made an abbattior of German casualties right outside the door to the windmill so I was never able to enter and contest or capture it. In the end, I had forgotten I needed to be within THREE inches of the objectives, not six. I lost quite miserably because of this error, and I was not happy about. Great opponent, plenty of witty banter... all around a great guy to lose to.

 photo IMG_20141019_124619.jpg

Game three, the final for Saturday, was good old 'Demolition.' For my secret mission I chose one called Saving Private Ryan, wherein I nominated one model in my army and had to make sure he didn't die during the game. I nominated my Leutnant. The table was a North African German Airfield, complete with runway, quonset huts, and German aircraft on the tarmac. Very scenic. My opponent was fielding a combined British Airborne and Commando army... with several small squads of infantry, a Stuart tank, and a Humber armored car. My StuH again ran riot and obliterated one squad on its own. My Nebelwerfer missed every time it fired, and quickly became a target for his mortar. The game was going my way, what with my two MMG's mowing down his infantry and my sniper taking out his commander. We had a long distance machine gun duel and that was fun. His Stuart managed to imobilize my StuH, and it then sat taking PIAT rounds from a team I just couldn't seem to kill. Bloody veterans. So, turn five I have my infantry swarming towards his base and braving the blistering fire from his MMG and Humber. Then... he brought a flamethrower team on from reserve. WHOOSH! There went my sniper team. Oh yeah.. and then there was that 10 man Commando section that had outflanked. There they were suddenly, gunning down one of my MMG's in a point blank hail of SMG fire. I brought on my last infantry squad from reserve, intending to blast the Commandos that were frighteningly within distance of my command bunker. Only, I neglected to fire. Somehow, I forgot they were there and focussed my attention elsewhere on the table. Well. The Commandos charged my infantry section and in one brutal round of combat, eliminated my infantry section. They made a good show of it though and left only one Commando left. This was, of course, just enough for him to capture the objective in turn 7. One failed command roll on the other side and I missed out on capturing my objective. So. Then. Five points for keeping my Leutnant alive, and my second loss of the day. My opponent was really cool, and had one of the best looking and characterful armies of the weekend.

Thus, I packed up my army and headed home. I steeled myself for the final two matches on the next day and hoped beyond hope that I wouldn't have to face one of the Soviet armies or the one guy that brought Japs. On the plus side I had played more games in one day that I had the previous four months.

Day two dawned with me running late and having to consider the posted speed limit somewhat of a recommendation... I barely made it in time.

My first battle for Sunday was against a regular US Infantry in the Top Secret scenario. For this game I chose the 'Blitzkreig'secret mission which gives you bonus points for getting your infantry and vehicles into your opponent's deployment zone. Having recently played this mission in a home game (and losing) I knew what I needed to do.

The table had a lovely road running lengthwise, with the objective smack in the middle... so I decided my StuH would outflank. With everything else I used bomb craters (heavy cover) and woods to cover my troops until his infantry broke into the open. One they did, though, I started firing. I lucked out in his rolling a 1 for his airstrike... and thus murtalizing his three units surrounding the objective. That, coupled with the withering fire of four infantry squads, two MMG's, the StuH, the Nebelwefer, and the mortar meant that I wiped out a large percentage of his army in the space of 1 turn. I then surrounded the objective with three infantry squads and the StuH. In the following turn I ran like mad with the objective. I didn't get my secret mission but neither did he. I did hold the objective and thus chalked up my SECOND Bolt Action win. EVER.

 photo IMG_20141019_124627.jpg

Game five, the final game... was Maximum Attrition. My opponent... was Soviets. I shuddered, two or three times. My secret mission for this was POW, which awards points for engaging an enemy HQ unit in close combat and thus capturing them. As my opponent was describing his units, I nearly fainted at the unit of SMG and panzerfaust armed veterans in a truck. Then, they didn't seem so bad compared to the SMG and Panzerfaust armed combat engineers with body armor, flamethrower, and mounted in a truck. Shudder.

The orders dice worked out in my favor and I got to place my units in a side-to-side wall of firepower. My Nebelwerfer fired, but of the three units I shot at, the only one I HIT was his commander... so that was nine HE hits for two guys. At least I got a point for my secret mission? The game was very much not in my opponent's favor. Early pins and no commander meant some of his units did not do much of anything for the whole game except absorb fire. I felt bad for the guy because he kept failing orders tests and spending the whole game facing my firepower. In the end it was a pretty crushing victory. He'd chosen the Blitzkrieg special mission so he picked up some points from that. I have to say I was supremely impressed with his candor. Too many times have I played someone that rapidly becomes a poor sport when the game does not go their way, but Ryan muscled through and was a very admirable foe. I'd face him and his list again any day.

The main benefit of the event was learning that there are four Bolt Action players within 30 minutes of my home so I was thrilled to learn that. I also chalked up victory in three of five battles, and surpassed my yearly quota of games in two days. Lots, lots, lots of fun. I also won an "Italy and the Axis" book in a raffle so an African Campaign Italian army is almost a foregone conclusion for me now. How do I tell my wife? Many apologies for not taking more pictures... but in my defense I was like a kid in a candy shop!

My StuH 42 was the star of the weekend for me, and if the conversations were any indicator Warlord should see several orders for StuH's soon. My medium mortar had one REALLY GOOOD game, one GOOD game, and three 'meh' games. I'd totally take it again, though. The Nebelwefer was better for the terror it caused in my opponents, because it didn't really do much else. The two MMG's were ace as well. Most opponents shied away from their threat, and those that did brave the two teams suffered pretty horrendous casualties. I will definitely take them again. The Panzerfausts, at 5 points, are a no-brainer for me. It gave my infantry and anti-tank threat while not resorting to a fixed position artillery piece or expensive team. They'll be a standard for me now too.

The event was well organized, managed, and supremely enjoyable. I'm already making plans for next year, and I have to say that for my first tournament experience I had an absolute blast. Thanks again to the fellows that organized it (at the expense of being able to play themselves), and all the players that loaned their terrain for the enjoyment of all. I also want to thank those on the forum and freinds that gave me invaluable advice going into the tournament. It was a big help.

Operation Sting was a complete success. Job well done, men. Job well done.

More Panzergrenadiers! Weekend General's Germans, continued...

Here's the second platoon of my mid/late war German Panzergrenadier force for Warlord Games' Bolt Action. These are predominantly models by Wargames Factory, with an odd figure from Warlord or Perry. I went with these two manufacturers because I really prefer the less heroic stature of the models, especially when placed next to my vehicles.

 photo SecondPlatoonCommand1.jpg

This is the leutnant and attendant, and were the first two guys I painted out of this 2,000 point force. They're better than some of the work I did in first platoon, but again still not my best.

Moving on... here's the infantry!

 photo SecondPlatoonFirstSquad.jpg

 photo SecondPlatoonInfantry1.jpg

 photo SecondPlatoonSecondSquad.jpg

Perhaps a bit out of order, here's my artillery observer!
I was really happy with the way this guy turned out. The map is two-part expoxy (milliput?), and painstakingly painted with really thin paint. The final effect turned out really well.

 photo SecondPlatoonArtillerySpotter.jpg

Next up is the requisite MMG team. The infantry are Wargames Factory, while the MMG is Warlords and the tripod is a custom assembly.

 photo SecondPlatoonMMG.jpg

 photo SecondPlatoonMMG2.jpg

Just as with my other weapons teams, I base the weapon on a 60mm base and then the crew on individual 20mm (?) bases that came with the Perry DAK box. This makes removal of casualties a heck of a lot easier.

This is the sniper team I put together because a lot of the history I've read, as well as the plethora of documentaries I've watched, seems to indicate snipers were everywhere! This guy is armed with a G43 so limits the timeframe in which games can be played, but looks cool and had the scope on it already.

 photo SniperTeam2.jpg

 photo SniperTeam3.jpg

Here's my heavy mortar. The tube is part of a Wargames Factory kit, while the base and tripod are scratch built. No, it's not as detailed as a kit from Warlord... but it's cheap and it does the job on the table. The crew are mostly Warlord, with one Wargames Factory guy thrown in because by this point I was starting to run out of figures.

 photo HeavyMortar5.jpg

 photo HeavyMortar2.jpg

They really suffered from the frosting effect that I believe happens when spraying clear coat in hot, humid weather. Primer leaves almost a 'fuzz' on them when used in the same weather. I really need a garage.

 photo HeavyMortar3.jpg

This is the spotter for, primarily, the heavy mortar though I could just as easily use him for the medium mortar. Personally I think the heavy mortar benefits most from the spotter because they're better off being far back and hidden.

 photo MortarSpotter2.jpg

 photo MortarSpotter1.jpg

This is the latest addition to my Panzergrenadiers... a 15cm nebelwerfer 41! I haven't used it in a game yet but a lot of people on the forum say they're great, and it is certainly a cool weapon so we'll see. I'm really please with the way the model turned out. As with all my crewed weapons I based the crew separately but in this case it's also so I can cinematically set them off to the side with the thing fires... apparently the crew had to be something like 15 meters away from the weapon when it fired.

 photo Nebelwerfer2.jpg

 photo NebelwerferCrew2.jpg

 photo NebelwerferCrew.jpg

And finally, the whole force. So far, that is..

 photo WholeForce1.jpg

That's it for now. I've got Captain Veers himself as a work in process and then it's on to vehicles if I could get me blasted airbrush to work properly (all user error, I'm sure).
Thanks for looking, and Game On!!

Panzergrenadiers! Weekend General's Bolt Action Germans, Part 1

Here is the 'first platoon' of my mid/late war Panzergrenadier force for Warlord games. They're predominantly from the Perry Miniatures' DAK box. I have to say these were a good value. They were reasonably easy to assemble, there are a lot of options, and you get a lot of troops from one box. The only real problem I had with them was that the helmets/field caps sit really high on their heads, but if you cut down the top of their noggin the headgear fits fine. If you look closely you'll see which models were made before I learned this trick.
My force, which totals about 2,000 points, consists of Perry Miniatures and Wargames Factory for the most part plus a few Warlord Games figures thrown in. I've been inspired by the 21st Panzer Division because they fought in several theaters. Since I used Perry's DAK box to start with I've decided these figures will be the veterans that've fought through several theaters of battle. This, in my mind, explains the older kit they're wearing. The Wargames Factory models will be the regular infantry.

This first post will cover the command section of the platoon. The leutnant is as good a place as any to start so here we go...

 photo 5a55735e-2235-4081-bae3-bd9b5e8921c6.jpg

The officer looks like he is waving the men forward, luger pistol at the ready, while the attendant is ducking and covering from some unseen explosion or shot.

Here are some other pics.

 photo FirstPlatoonCommand1.jpg

 photo FirstPlatoonArtillerySpotter.jpg
This is the radio operator from the box, whom I plan to use as an artillery observer.

Next up are a few pics of my medic. The model is by Warlord, which a little chopping to reposition hands and such made for a cool look. I really like the way this guy turned out... it's like he's kneeling down to give a drink of water to a fellow soldier before going to work on the wounds. Since our games are based on the Western Front, he's not armed. ;)

 photo 682a63c7-3a97-4f46-a17f-c30ba1a417af.jpg

 photo 140570b5-11fb-4b6b-94a3-d4ff454bd78f.jpg

That does it for the command section. Next up we'll look at the boots on the ground... the infantry!

Here's the first infantry squad of this platoon. I actually painted these guys after the Wargames Factory models and I think I got into a "just get it done" sort of mindset. Not my best work, but they're painted. One other thing that REALLY gets my goat is the models that look 'frosted' in some pics. When I went to do the matte varnish it was particularly hot and humid outside so I think that's why they ended up that way. Other models I did a few weeks later in more mild weather turned out just fine. Since these guys belong to a motorized platoon I've decided it's... ummm... road dust. Yeah. They're coated in dust from the road after having raced into position to blunt an Allied attack. Since they're veterans I made a concerted effort to stick with MG34's where possible as well as avoiding late war arms like STG44's and the like.

 photo FirstPlatoonFirstSquad.jpg

 photo FirstPlatoonFirstSquad2.jpg

For those of you thinking "But good sir, you've used models with the older knee-high canvas boots. Weren't these phased out by 1943?" Well yes, snarky ready with an eye towards accuracy you're correct! What you don't know is that the chaps pictured here with the black knee-highs are of course participating in field trials of a knee-high leather boot, ordered by the Genaralquartiermeister at OKH. Many of the 'grenadiers have gladly got rid of theirs in favor of the more common ankle boots.

 photo FirstPlatoonSecondSquad.jpg

I really like the LMG gunner in this squad... sort of like he's just running up to a wall to lay down some cover fire.

Next up I'll regale you with the first platoon support units. As soon as my friend told me he was playing a US force, and I was going to run with the Germans I knew I wanted as many MG34 and MG42 teams as I could get. Their look is so iconic, and hearing that bbbrrrrraaaaapppp sound in all the movies and documentaries just stuck with me. So, I'll start with first platoon's MMG team!

 photo FirstPlatoonMMG.jpg

 photo FirstPlatoonMMG2.jpg

The perry miniatures come with, I think, 20mm round bases. Too small for regular gaming bases but GREAT for weapons teams. I base the weapon on a 60mm base, and then each team member individually for easy removal of casualties. The actual MMG is a rather hastily constructed affair, much inspired by the engineering adventures of a Warlord Forum dweller by the name of Rich H. While I'm nowhere NEAR his level of ability the end result works for me. The MMG itself is a spare from a friend's Warlord infantry sprue, plus some styrene rods. The ammo box comes from the Wargames Factory sprues. All in all, a good look... you know, despite that accursed frosting effect.

Next up, my light mortar. I had a few spare prone fellows and after my regular opponent used light mortars, and their move'n'fire ability to good effect I decided I'd have one as a cheap option.

 photo LightMortar1.jpg

 photo LightMortar2.jpg

Now, after initially reading the rule book I thought that mortars might not really be a good investment, points-wise, because they're so hard to score a hit with. However, being the history nerd that I am, I have read and heard in numerous books and documentaries about how the mortar caused a rather large number of casualties so I figured I might as well take one. Thus, here is my medium mortar team.

 photo MediumMortar1.jpg

The figures are Perry, while the mortar itself is from some futuristic game by Wargames Factory. I scored the bits off of eBay and while they're not at all historically accurate, they were excessively affordable and the average American player of Bolt Action probably won't notice. I really like the guy with his fist in the air as if to signal the next shot.

 photo MediumMortar3.jpg

Alright, next up is the ATR Team. Sure, by the time of our games set in 1944, this thing won't be destroying any tanks it does work well against my opponent's really annoying MMG Jeeps and as a high powered poor man's sniper against his accursed veteran infantry. Plus, we occasionally dabble in Italy, when they were maybe still used on occasion? Shhh. Leave me my dreams! Really, I just had a few spare prone figures and I really like the look of the weapon.

 photo ATR2.jpg

Now, last up I believe, is the Flak 38. This was a no-brainer for me. The scene in Saving Private Ryan where the SS soldaten blast the paratroopers off the Tiger with the 20mm cannon was mindblowing to me. Also, since my friend plays a US force, I face a lot of really annoying air strikes so a little AA capability can't hurt! The gun itself is from Company B and I have to say it went together really well. About two days after I assembled it, another fellow on the forum told me about a plastic kit he'd found and I sadly really like that one a LOT better. Oh well. I'm not going to throw away $20 so here it is.

 photo Autocannon.jpg

 photo KettenkradandAutocannon.jpg

The kettenkrad is by Perry, from their DAK line. I went with this versus Warlord's simply because I wanted it to fit the look of the rest of the platoon. The crew are also Perry DAK and yes, just for the heck of it, I did the one guy with the canvas boots. I decided he has really big feet and the only boots the Quartermaster could find were these.

Well... I think that does it for my first platoon models. That's probably a good thing with all the pics already in this post.

Next post will look at the second platoon!

Thanks for looking. Game on!!
